This Northern California Park Is a Dream Camping Escape Into the Redwoods

If you’re craving a Northern California escape that feels worlds away from crowds and city noise, Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park delivers in a big way. Tucked along the coast about an hour north of Eureka, the park protects more than 14,000 acres of old-growth redwoods, wild beaches, and fern-filled canyons—making it an ideal weekend basecamp or a must-stop on a North Coast road trip.
One of the best introductions to the park is the Prairie Creek Trail, a mellow 4.3-mile walk that begins near the visitor center and winds beneath towering redwoods. It’s common to spot Roosevelt elk grazing nearby, and the quiet here is broken only by birdsong and the rush of the creek.

Fern Canyon is another standout. This short loop hike takes you through a narrow gorge draped in lush green ferns, with shallow stream crossings and footbridges along the way. It’s easy to see why scenes from Jurassic Park were filmed here. Access requires driving an unpaved road, and summer visitors need a free parking permit reserved online.
Camping adds to the experience. Elk Prairie Campground offers forested sites near a creek, while Gold Bluffs Beach Campground places you right behind the dunes with the Pacific Ocean just steps away. Both are open year-round, and wildlife sightings—from elk to bears—are part of the adventure.

With nearby stops like Eureka, Arcata, and remote beaches to the north, Prairie Creek makes a compelling case for becoming your next NorCal tradition.
