This Northern California Redwood Forest Is the Ultimate Forest Bathing Escape

If “forest bathing” is calling your name, Northern California has no shortage of places to unplug—but few feel as quietly immersive as Forest of Nisene Marks State Park. Tucked just inland from Highway 1 near Aptos, this redwood-filled refuge offers more than 10,000 acres of shaded canyons, fern-lined creeks, and a welcome lack of crowds.
Unlike flashier redwood destinations, Nisene Marks rewards visitors with solitude. While the park’s landscape was heavily logged in the late 1800s, decades of protection have allowed the forest to rebound into a dense, peaceful sanctuary. Today, hikers and mountain bikers can explore roughly 30 miles of trails beneath towering second-growth redwoods, accompanied mostly by birdsong and flowing water.

The park is a year-round escape. Summer heat fades quickly under the canopy, while spring brings fresh greens and fall delivers crisp air and subtle color. Parking is limited, so arriving early is smart. Dogs are allowed on select routes, including the Aptos Creek Fire Road and a handful of trails, but must remain leashed.
Trail options range from mellow to demanding. Shorter routes like Vienna Woods offer quick creekside wanders, while longer adventures—such as the Aptos Creek Fire Road or Sand Point Overlook—deliver big mileage, elevation, and sweeping forest views.
Less than an hour from the Bay Area, Nisene Marks feels worlds away—a reminder that some of California’s most restorative places are also its quietest.
