This Sacramento Park Pond Just Became an Urban Fishing Destination

If you have been looking for a bass fishing spot close to Sacramento, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife just made one.
CDFW recently stocked smallmouth, largemouth and spotted bass into the 7.5-acre park pond at Gibson Ranch, a 355-acre Sacramento County park near the community of Elverta. The pond sits less than 15 miles from downtown Sacramento, making it one of the most accessible warmwater fishing destinations in the region.
The stocking is part of a pilot program aimed at creating more close-to-home fishing opportunities for urban anglers. CDFW says the majority of California’s licensed anglers live in metropolitan areas, and giving them quality options nearby is key to keeping people engaged with the sport.
Before bringing in the bass, CDFW biologists evaluated the pond and found it loaded with natural food sources, including sunfish, crayfish and bullfrogs. The shallow farm pond offered ideal warmwater habitat with strong potential for natural reproduction.
The bass themselves came from an unusual source. CDFW had collected them from Lake Berryessa for use in a 5,000-gallon demonstration aquarium at the International Sportsmen’s Exposition in Sacramento back in January. After the event wrapped up, several dozen bass were redirected to Gibson Ranch rather than being returned.
The timing worked out well. The fish arrived a few months ahead of spawning season, giving them time to settle in, build nests and hopefully produce a new generation of bass in the pond.
Gibson Ranch is also set to rejoin CDFW’s Fishing in the City program and will receive seasonal catfish and trout plants to support year-round angling alongside the new bass fishery.
