This Timelapse of the Perseid Meteor Shower and the Northern Lights Shows a Special Night in Northern California
Northern California was treated to a rare and awe-inspiring display last night as the Northern Lights lit up the sky over Lake Almanor, with the Perseid meteor shower flying overhead at the same time. Local photographer Jake Edwards was on hand to capture the breathtaking spectacle, creating a magnificent timelapse that showcases the vibrant colors dancing across the night sky with the racing meteors.
Edwards’ timelapse beautifully captures the serene landscape of Lake Almanor, illuminated by the ethereal glow of the auroras. The rare combination of the Northern Lights and Perseid meteor shower was one of the most rare celestial events we can remember in NorCal.

And the good news? There’s a chance the Northern Lights could return tonight. Due to ongoing solar activity, the conditions that brought last night’s display are expected to persist, giving Northern Californians another opportunity to witness this extraordinary natural phenomenon.
