Wildlife Officials Stock Lake Oroville with 24,000 Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout

On March 21, 2025, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) stocked Lake Oroville with 24,000 Eagle Lake Rainbow Trout, a welcome surprise for the fishing community.

Earlier concerns suggested that DFW would be unable to stock Lake Oroville this year due to disease detected in Chinook Salmon eggs at the Feather River Fish Hatchery during fall 2024. However, the planting of Eagle Lake Trout ensures anglers have plenty of opportunities to enjoy excellent fishing conditions this season.

Eagle Lake Trout, originating from Northern California’s Eagle Lake, are renowned among anglers for their rapid growth, impressive fighting capabilities, and exceptional taste. The trout planted are classified as “catchable”—measuring approximately 10 to 12 inches—and are sterile triploids, making them a perfect fit for sustainable fishing practices.
