Wind Advisory: Gusts Expected to Exceed 40 MPH Across California this Week

Strong winds are set to impact large portions of Central California and the Sierra foothills through Thursday, prompting a wind advisory from the National Weather Service Hanford.

The advisory was issued Tuesday at 10:58 a.m. and is valid from 4 p.m. Tuesday through 4 p.m. Thursday, covering Los Banos–Dos Palos, Merced–Madera–Mendota, Planada–Le Grand–Snelling, the Mariposa and Madera foothills, lower Sierra areas, Yosemite National Park, and the Kern River Valley.

According to the NWS, south winds of 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph are expected. Forecasters warn the winds could blow around unsecured outdoor objects, knock down tree limbs, and lead to isolated power outages. Driving may also become hazardous, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, RVs, and vehicles towing trailers.

Officials urge residents to secure loose items like patio furniture, trash bins, and holiday decorations. Drivers are advised to slow down, keep both hands on the wheel, and maintain distance from large vehicles during gusty conditions.

The NWS also reminds residents to stay informed about wind alerts, which range from wind advisories to high wind warnings. If stronger warnings are issued, people should take shelter in sturdy buildings and avoid travel if possible.
