Wind Advisory Issued for Lake Tahoe as Gusts Near 45 MPH

Boaters and paddlers planning time on Lake Tahoe should prepare for hazardous conditions as gusty winds move into the region.
The National Weather Service in Reno issued a Lake Wind Advisory late Wednesday night, warning of rough conditions on Lake Tahoe from Thursday afternoon through early Saturday morning. The advisory goes into effect at 4 p.m. Thursday and remains active until 4 a.m. Saturday.
According to the forecast, southwest winds will ramp up Thursday evening, blowing between 10 and 20 mph with gusts reaching 40 mph. Conditions are expected to worsen on Friday, with sustained winds of 15 to 25 mph and gusts up to 45 mph. Wave heights could build to 2 to 4 feet, creating dangerous conditions on the open lake.

The NWS cautions that small boats, kayaks, and paddleboards are especially vulnerable in these conditions and could easily capsize. Even experienced boaters are urged to check lake conditions before heading out and to be prepared for sudden increases in wind speed and wave height.
Those with flexible plans are encouraged to delay boating or paddling activities until winds subside and lake conditions improve later in the weekend.
