Winter Storm Warning Issued for the Sierra as Major Winter Storm Set Hit Northern California

A powerful winter storm is set to impact the Sierra and surrounding areas starting Monday afternoon, bringing heavy snowfall, strong winds, and hazardous travel conditions.

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno has issued a Winter Storm Warning from 1 p.m. Monday through 7 a.m. Wednesday, warning of significant snowfall and dangerous winds.

Storm Details:

  • Snow Accumulations: 1 to 3 feet above 7,000 feet; 6 to 12 inches below 7,000 feet
  • Wind Gusts: Up to 90 mph along the Sierra crest, 35-45 mph in lower valleys
  • Hazards: Dangerous travel, potential power outages, and falling trees

The NWS advises that travel could be “very difficult to impossible” during the storm, with hazardous conditions impacting Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Strong winds could also cause tree damage and power outages.

Safety Precautions for Travelers:

  • If you must drive, carry an emergency kit with food, water, a flashlight, warm clothing, and a charged cell phone.
  • Check road conditions by calling 511 before heading out.
  • Avoid driving near downed power lines or fallen trees—call 911 if you see them.
  • If stranded, stay in your vehicle, signal for help, and avoid walking for assistance.

This storm is expected to be one of the biggest of the season, so prepare accordingly and stay safe!
