Alex Honnold Returns to Yosemite to Attempt Another ‘Free Solo’ Feat

Alex Honnold, the renowned climber and star of the Oscar-winning documentary Free Solo, is back in Yosemite National Park pursuing another groundbreaking climbing feat. This time, he’s attempting to free climb The Nose, the iconic 2,900-foot vertical route on El Capitan.
Honnold, who set the speed record on The Nose with Tommy Caldwell in 2018 (a blazing 1 hour, 58 minutes, and 7 seconds), has never attempted to free climb the route—a challenging style where ropes are used only for protection, not to aid the ascent. Since Lynn Hill became the first person to free climb The Nose in 1993, only about 15 climbers, including Caldwell, have accomplished the feat.
Speaking from Yosemite, where he’s sheltering in his van with his family during a storm, Honnold described the allure of The Nose. “It’s the greatest big-wall climb in the world,” he said.
For Honnold, who famously free soloed El Capitan in 2017, the attempt to free climb The Nose represents yet another bold step in his storied career, blending technical mastery with his signature determination. Fans eagerly await updates as he tackles this legendary route once more.
