Lake Tahoe Officials Release New Emergency Wildfire Evacuation Plan
Local leaders and emergency officials have unveiled the new Lake Tahoe Regional Evacuation Plan, developed in collaboration with 23 agencies across the Tahoe region.
Released on Wednesday, the plan serves as a centralized resource for real-time emergency information, including alert systems, shelter locations, and evacuation routes.
The need for a comprehensive evacuation strategy became urgent after the 2021 Caldor Fire, when residents trying to leave South Lake Tahoe faced massive gridlock due to limited exit routes. The new plan aims to address those concerns and will apply to all areas of the Lake Tahoe basin.
Officials describe the plan as a “living document,” meaning it will be updated as needed to stay current. Residents can submit comments for the next two months, with the City of South Lake Tahoe compiling feedback.
The plan is expected to provide better coordination and preparedness for potential emergencies in the future.
