Tahoe Residents Asked to Keep an Eye Out for Orphaned Bear Cub that Escaped from Facility

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife and Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care are seeking help from the public in locating a young, orphaned black bear that has escaped from LTWC’s facility in South Lake Tahoe.

The bear cub, which has a visible metal tag on its right ear and weighs around 50 pounds, escaped from LTWC’s outdoor enclosure on February 9. The bear was rescued in December 2022 and has been rehabilitating at LTWC since then, adding 30 pounds in two months. While the young bear is not in immediate danger and is not a threat, it is believed to be too young to survive long-term on its own, particularly in the winter conditions in South Lake Tahoe.

CDFW and LTWC are requesting that the public report any sightings or tips about the bear, but they should not approach or actively search for it as the bear dislikes people and can be skittish. Visual contact should be maintained with the bear when reporting sightings if possible. Those with sightings or tips are urged to contact CDFW or LTWC. CDFW is investigating the circumstances surrounding the bear’s escape.

The non-profit LTWC had a previous escape from its facility, Tamarack, the bear cub that was burned in the Tamarack Fire in August 2021. Tamarack was smaller than the current missing cub but has been sighted numerous times and appears to be thriving. The facility had to pass a CDFW inspection to keep cubs after Tamarack’s escape. Currently, there are 14 cubs at the LTWC facility.
